Het Land van Gaum, waarin Montquintin ligt, is een (prachtig) stuk van Belgisch-Lotharingen en dat was, tot 170 miljoen jaar geleden, de bodem van een zee, bevolkt met enorme reptielen. Die bodem bestond uit sedimentlagen van verschillende samenstelling: mergel, schiefer, klei, kalk- en zandsteen. Nadat de zeebodem omhoogkwam, werd deze uiteraard ingesneden en geërodeerd door rivieren zoals de Semois, de Vire en de Ton. Op die manier ontstonden in het Land van Gaum drie heuvelrijen of cuesta's (en uiteraard nog meer in Frankrijk). Een cuesta (hoor je het Spaanse klankje in de naam?) is in feite een heuvel met een steile flank en een zachte helling. In het Land van Gaum is de steile flank naar het noorden gericht, de zachte naar het zuiden.
