In een voorstad van Toronto, genaamd "Netville", vond een bijzonder experiment plaats. Bewoners van dit gebied kregen gratis breedbandinternet aangeboden. De sociologen Keith Hampton en Barry Wellman bestudeerden de effecten. Er waren twee groepen. De eerste groep (groep A) kreeg toegang tot deze technologie, de andere niet (groep B). De veronderstelling was dat de technologie direct contact tussen mensen zou vervangen. Het experiment toonde echter aan dat groep A diepere en bredere banden met andere bewoners ontwikkelde en hechtere relaties in de buurt opbouwde. De elektronische communicatie versterkte de directe sociale contacten aanzienlijk, in plaats van ze te vervangen.
