De beroemde geograaf Walter Christaller werd hier in Berneck geboren. Zijn belangrijkste bijdrage aan de discipline is de "Central Place Theory", voor het eerst gepubliceerd in 1933. Deze baanbrekende theorie was de basis van de studie van steden als systemen van steden in plaats van eenvoudige hiërarchieën of afzonderlijke entiteiten. Maar wist je dat ook enigszins paradoxaal, Christaller zich bij de Communistische Partij voeged na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, nadat hij lid was geweest van de nazi-partij. Tijdens de oorlog werkte hij onder de SS.
