De Lauter is de 27,9 km lange, linker en westelijke bronrivier van de Schlitz in de Vogelsbergkreis en Landkreis Fulda in Hessen, Duitsland, die in Bad Salzschlirf samenstroomt met de rechter en zuidelijke bronrivier Altefeld. Het stroomgebied van de Lauter beslaat 136,58 km².
De Lauter ontspringt in het middelgebergte Vogelsberg ongeveer 2 km noordnoordoostelijk van de berg Sieben Ahorn in het daar gelegen Oberwald. Haar bron ligt in de Vogelsbergkreis in het natuurpark Vulkanregion Vogelsberg op de bosrijke Forstwiesenkopf op ongeveer 670 m hoogte.
