Het Kraftwerk Zschornewitz was een van de oudste krachtcentrales van Duitsland en is tegenwoordig een industrieel monument.
In 1913 bereikten de Berlijnse Elektriciteitswerken hun capaciteitsgrenzen, waardoor nieuwe elektriciteitsleveringscontracten met de stad Berlijn dienden te worden onderhandeld. In die tijd was AEG toonaangevend op het gebied van elektriciteitsproduktie en wilde Berlijn van elektriciteit uit afstandslevering voorzien. Hierop werd een krachtcentrale gepland met zes stoomturbines van elk 16 MW elektrische capaciteit en 60 stoomketels van elk 450 m² verwarmingsoppervlak. De benodigde bruinkool moest uit het dagbouwgebied Golpa-Jeßnitz komen. Voor de locatie van de krachtcentrale waren er drie ontwerpen, die samenhingen met de toevoer van koelwater voor de krachtcentrale.
