De Israelitische Religionsgemeente in Leipzig werd pas in 1847 opgericht, hoewel er al sinds de middeleeuwen sporen van joods leven in Leipzig gevonden kunnen worden. Pas vanaf het midden van de 19e eeuw was het Joden toegestaan zich permanent in Leipzig te vestigen.
Vanaf die tijd ontwikkelde zich een veelzijdig joods leven in Leipzig. De nieuwkomers emanzipeerden zich steeds meer als Leipzigse burgers. Synagogen werden gebouwd, scholen opgericht. In slechts honderd jaar tijd werd de Leipzigse Kehillah de zesde grootste in heel Duitsland en de grootste in Saksen; in 1925 had ze ongeveer 13.000 leden.
