De Volksternwarte Tirschenreuth werd in 1964 opgericht door Gerhard Franz en is in de noordelijke Oberpfalz een unieke astronomische instelling. Het overbrengen van de vreugde in de natuur staat centraal in het observatorium. Inmiddels is de sterrenwacht ter ere van haar oprichter omgedoopt tot Gerhard-Franz-Volksternwarte.
Eigenaar is de Volkshochschule Tirschenreuth; de Volksternwarte wordt beheerd door de astronomische werkgroep Tirschenreuth onder leiding van Peter Postler.
