De Falkenstein is een van de indrukwekkendste vrijstaande rotsen in de Saksische Zwitserland in de vrije staat Saksen. Hij bevindt zich bij Bad Schandau in de Schrammsteinen, waar hij voorligt. De enorme rots is bijna honderd meter hoog en bestaat uit zandsteen. In de middelleeuwen bevond zich op de Falkenstein een burcht - nog steeds zijn in de rots uitgehouwen treden en balkeninsnijdingen zichtbaar.
Waarschijnlijk sinds het midden van de 14e eeuw werd de Falkenstein als burcht uitgebreid en gebruikt. Hij behoorde, net als bijna de hele rechteroever van de Saksische Zwitserland, tot de heerschappij Hohnstein met zetel in het kasteel Hohnstein, dat het Boheemse adellijke geslacht Berka von Dubá in 1353 van keizer Karel IV als Boheemse leengoed had gekregen.
