De Grote Beerberg is een overblijfsel van een meer dan 250 miljoen jaar actieve vulkaan en met 982,9 m boven NHN de hoogste heuvel van het Thüringer Woud en van Thüringen. Hij bevindt zich tussen de drie stadsdelen van Suhl: Heidersbach, Goldlauter en Gehlberg en bestaat uit rhyoliet.
De Grote Beerberg verheft zich in het kader van zijn topgebied en zijn zuidoostflank direct buiten het natuurpark Thüringer Woud. Zijn top ligt 3,8 km westsidwestelijk van Gehlberg, op wiens grondgebied hij ligt, 2,6 km noordnoordoostelijk van Heidersbach en 3 km noordelijk van Goldlauter, alle stadsdelen van de vrije stad Suhl, evenals 5,5 km oostelijk van de stad Zella-Mehlis. Vanwege zijn gedeeltelijke ligging in het toenmalige Pruisische district Schleusingen maakte de berg tot 1945 niet volledig deel uit van de Vrijstaat Thüringen, wat wellicht samenhangt met het feit dat zijn status als hoogste berg van Thüringen nog niet overal bekend is.
