Het diepte ontstaat door de samenvloeiing van het Friedeburger Diep en het Neustädter Diep, ongeveer 2,7 km ten zuidoosten van Neustadtgödens. Het stroomt aanvankelijk in zuidoostelijke richting, ondertunnelt de A 29, de L 815, de spoorlijn Oldenburg–Wilhelmshaven en bij Ellenserdammersiel de Grodenstraße. Daarna volgt het diep een gebogen oostelijke route, die tussen 1993 en 2001 is gevormd door de afgraving van klei. De hierdoor ontstane baggerplassen maakten vanaf 2011 deel uit van het landschap beschermde gebied „Marschen am Jadebusen–West“. Sinds februari 2019 liggen het Ellenserdammer Diep en de baggerplassen in het landschap beschermde gebied „Teichfledermausgewässer“, dat is aangewezen ter bescherming van het FFH-gebied „Teichfledermaus-Habitate im Raum Wilhelmshaven“.
