Het kleine natuurreservaat ligt aan de rand van het militaire oefenterrein Senne en vertoont typische kenmerken van het Sennelandschap: Op de voedingsarme zandgrond groeien zandmagerrasen en heide, terwijl berken en dennen de bomen domineren. Het vlakke heidelandschap heeft een hoge biodiversiteit. Aan de noordelijke rand werd in vroeger tijden het zand tot op de onderliggende mergellaag afgegraven. In de put verzamelt zich op sommige plaatsen water, wat het groeien van vocht- en kleiaardeliefhebbende soorten bevordert.
