Voor de kolonie van de visdieven is er een langlopend onderzoeksproject van het Instituut voor Vogelinformatie “Vogelwarte Helgoland” over de biologie van de visdief, een kleine langlevende zeevogelsoort. Sinds 1984 broeden visdieven aan de noordzijde van het Bantermeer en worden ze sindsdien intensief geobserveerd en bestudeerd.
