De Hornisgrinde is een bergrug in het noordelijk deel van het Zwarte Woud. Het hoogste punt van deze bergrug ligt enkele kilometers zuidelijker (1164 meter hoogte), het noordelijk deel van deze bergrug heeft de top op 1130 meter hoogte liggen. Het noordelijk deel van deze bergrug is gemakkelijk te herkennen aan de markante SWR televisietoren. De toegang tot de top kan soms afgesloten zijn d.m.v. een slagboom. Bij vorst moet je rekening houden met vallend ijs vanaf de televisietoren!
De Hornisgrinde-Nord wordt vaak beklommen in combinatie met de Unterstmatt, of vanuit Sasbachwalden. In beide gevallen overbrug je dan bijna 960 meter hoogteverschil vanuit het Rijndal.
