Het altmarkse dorp Böddenstedt, een straatdorp met een kerk, ligt ongeveer twee kilometer ten zuidwesten van de kernstad Salzwedel. In het noorden stroomt de Salzwedeler Dumme. De dichtstbijzijnde buurplaats in het zuiden is Kemnitz.
De eerste vermelding van Böddenstedt dateert uit 1321 als villam Bodenstede, toen de ridders Gebhard en Heinrich von Alvensleben het dorp aan de stad Salzwedel overdroegen. In 1354 wordt het genoemd als villa Boddenstede. In het landboek van de mark Brandenburg uit 1375 wordt het dorp vermeld als Bodenstede. De oude stad Salzwedel bezat alle rechten en de molen, de latere Böddenstedter Mühle, een watermolen. Verdere vermeldingen zijn in 1541 Bodenstedt en in 1687 Böddenstedt voor Saltzwedel.
