Het Steenhuis in Marburg overleefde de verwoestende grote brand van 1319, die bijna de hele stad had verwoest. Het gebouw is in de gotische stijl van zandsteen gebouwd, waarbij de trapgevel en de middeleeuwse toiletkamer typisch zijn.
De massieve stenen bouwstijl was in die tijd ongebruikelijk in Marburg, aangezien in de Marburger binnenstad tot in de 19e eeuw de woonhuizen in vakwerkstijl werden gebouwd. Het Steenhuis werd van het midden van de 14e tot het 19e eeuw bewoond door belangrijke patriciërs- en burgerfamilies, landgrave ambtenaren en professoren.
