Brual wordt voor het eerst vermeld in de 10e eeuw. Volgens de overlevering waren er drie kastelen in Brual.
De buurtschap met de Oostfriezen is de Brualers niet altijd goed bevallen. Het afsluiten van de Ems als de belangrijkste waterweg van het gebied was in Brual gemakkelijk uit te voeren. Het bezit van de vestingwerken, de Dieler Schanze, was voor de geïnteresseerde volken en prinsen behoorlijk waardevol.
