Bourges ) is een gemeente in het centrale Frankrijk aan de rivier Yèvre. Het is de hoofdstad van het departement Cher en was ook de hoofdstad van de voormalige provincie Berry. De naam van de gemeente is afgeleid van de Bituriges, de naam van de oorspronkelijke inwoners, of van het Germaanse woord Burg, voor "heuvel" of "dorp". De Kelten noemden het Avaricon; Latinium-sprekenden: Avaricum. In de vierde eeuw voor Christus, net als in de tijd van Caesar, was het gebied eromheen het centrum van een Gallische confederatie.
