Hier in Auxerre huwden de Koninklijke Judith, het eerste kind van keizer Karel de Kale met Boudewijn met de IJzeren Arm, of Bouwdewijn I. Maar dat was zonder de toestemming van haar vader. Bouwdewijn "schaakte" Judith uit het plaatsje Senlis. Deze gebeurtenis werd een beroemd middeleeuwse liefdesverhaal. Om uit de klauwen van haar woedende vader te blijven, zwierven ze een tijdje in Europa rond en schuilden ze bij haar oom Lotharius II tot in oktober. Ze vluchtten op bedevaart naar Rome, en door tussenkomst van paus Nicolaas I traden ze op 13 december 863 officieel hier in het huwelijk. Haar vader zou uiteindelijk Boudewijn de eerste Graaf van Vlaanderen maken. Maar Judith had specifiek voor hem gekozen. En dat maakt haar een beetje de oermoeder van Vlaanderen.
