Gelegen in Mortemart, geklasseerd als een van de Mooiste Dorpen van Frankrijk en een Historisch Monument, staat de feodale motte op het kruispunt van oude wegen. Een van de mottes in Mortemart, een symbool van de macht van de familie Drut, getuigt van het vroege feodalisme rond het jaar 1000. Abbon Drut, ridder en heer van Mortemart, steunde de graaf van La Marche tegen de koning van Frankrijk tijdens het beleg van Bellac in 995. De nabijgelegen parochiekerk Saint-Hilaire werd in het begin van de 19e eeuw verwoest.
