Het werd vanaf 1878 door de staat gebouwd op grond die zij zelf van de gemeente en particulieren had gekocht. Het werd voltooid in 1890. Het bevat de beenderen van ongeveer 3.000 Franse en Duitse soldaten. Volgens een overeenkomst van 1 maart 1951 tussen het Ministerie van Veteranenzaken (Gravenbureau) en het Comité neemt dit laatste de (dure) kosten van het onderhoud voor zijn rekening. Het terras moest in 1999 volledig opnieuw worden aangelegd en kan worden bezocht door de beheerder van het huis te vragen.
