Naast astronomische instrumenten behoren de vier door John Harrison ontwikkelde scheepschronometers vast en zeker tot de interessantste tentoonstellingsstukken in het museum.
Tot 1760 bestonden er geen stipte uurwerken, zodat de kapiteins hun exacte lengtemaat niet konden berekenen. Nadat in 1707 een deel van de Engelse vloot schipbreuk had geleden op een rif, loofde de admiraliteit een beloning van £ 20.000 uit voor een betrouwbaardere chronometer. In 1736 stelde de onbekende horlogemaker John Harrison zijn Time Keeper No. 1 voor. Het uurwerk was zowat een meter hoog en woog 36 kg. De admiraliteit vond het gevaarte te groot en te onhandig. Dus bouwde de geniale Harrison voort, om in 1760 de zeevaartautoriteiten met zijn nog vuisthoge Time Keeper No. 4 voor zich te winnen. Elf jaar later had de chronometer zijn deugdelijkheid bewezen in de zeevaart en kreeg Harrison de beloofde £ 20.000. Bij de koninklijke sterrenwacht hoort verder nog een planetarium.
