Keswick betekent 'boerderij waar kaas wordt gemaakt'. Keswick is een typisch marktstadje. Keswick kreeg al in 1276 een marktrecht. De markt wordt elke zaterdag gehouden in de autovrije hoofdstraat in het centrum van de stad. Op het marktplein staat de Moot Hall, die ooit dienst deed als stadhuis, maar nu een lokaal toeristeninformatiecentrum is.
