Op 29 december 1170 werd aartsbisschop van Canterbury, Thomas Becket, vermoord in zijn eigen kathedraal door vier ridders, die geloofden dat ze handelden op directe orders van koning Hendrik II. Hij werd vervolgens een heilige en martelaar in zowel de Anglicaanse Kerk als de Rooms-Katholieke Kerk.
