Op dit plein liep Charles Darwin regelmatig, toen hij op bezoek ging bij de geoloog Roderick Murchinson. Op 29 januari 1842 regelde Roderick Murchinson in zijn woonst aan dit plein een ontmoeting met de toen nog veel bekendere wetenschapper Alexander von Humboldt. Darwin was echter geschokt door het gedrag van Alexander von Humboldt want die bleef maar ratelen zonder Darwin maar de mogelijkheid te bieden ook iets te vertellen.
