De houtsnij-industrie bloeit al sinds de 17e eeuw in Gherdëina. Sinds de 19e eeuw worden beelden en altaren uit de streek naar katholieke kerken over de hele wereld verscheept. In de 19e en 20e eeuw was het snijden van houten speelgoed zo'n wijdverbreide bezigheid in alle families in Gherdëina dat Amelia Edwards Urtijëi de "hoofdstad van het speelgoedland" noemde. Het meest bekend is de houten pop Peg, die in de 19e eeuw populair was in heel Europa en Amerika. De parochiekerk van Urtijëi herbergt een rijke collectie beelden die de afgelopen twee eeuwen door lokale kunstenaars zijn gesneden.
