In 1682 werd de gevel van de kathedraal Santa Maria Maggiore gesloopt. In 1805 liet Napoleon Bonaparte de gevel afgewerken. In zijn enthousiasme kondigde hij aan dat alle kosten betaald zouden worden door de Franse staat. Hoewel deze vergoeding nooit werd betaald had deze belofte het resultaat dat de gevel voltooid werd in 7 jaar tijd. Als een vorm van dankzegging, werd een standbeeld van Napoleon geplaatst op de top van een van de torens. Napoleon werd hier gekroond tot koning van Italië.
