Dries Mertens en Napels, dat is sinds de transfer van voetballer Mertens van PSV naar Napoli in 2013 grote liefde. In 2025 werd aan dat liefdesverhaal dan ook een zoveelste hoofdstuk toegevoegd. In het prachtige Castel Nuovo werd Mertens in het bijzin van zijn vrouw Kat Kerkhofs en hun zoontje Ciro benoemd tot ereburger van de stad Napels.
De band tussen Mertens en zijn gezin en Napels is sterk, want ook na zijn transfer naar het Turkse Galatasaray - waar hij eveneens een volksheld werd - bleef Napels de thuis van het gezin. Zo woont het gezin in een appartement in de Baai van Napels. Ook werd zoontje Ciro in de Zuid-Italiaanse stad geboren.
