De Universiteit van Cagliari is een Italiaanse staatsuniversiteit, opgericht in 1607, die officieel operationeel werd in 1626. In 2016 waren er 31.102 ingeschreven studenten.
Het Sardijnse parlement vroeg om een universiteit in de hoofdstad om het onderwijsaanbod te vergroten en de inwoners de nadelen van dure reizen naar de universiteiten op het vasteland te besparen, vooral naar die van Pisa, Bologna en Salamanca. In de vroege jaren 1600 werd, met de hulp van de aartsbisschop van Cagliari, kardinaal Francisco de Esquivel, de oprichting van de universiteit in Cagliari gerealiseerd: in 1606 gaf paus Paulus V de pauselijke bul uit en in 1620 werd het privilege voor de oprichting behaald door Filips III van Spanje.
