De naam is 'Castello Estense' (Kasteel van de Estes), maar sinds 1598 is de beroemde Este-dynastie door de Pauselijke Staten uit Ferrara verdreven. Toen koningin Christina van Zweden de stad in november 1655 bezocht, werd ze dan ook ontvangen door de kardinaal-legaat Alderano Cybo.
