Dit is de veertiende-eeuwse stadstoren die deel uitmaakt van het transmissiesysteem. Gebouwd door de Universitas Palermitana om de muren van de " Cassaro " te verdedigen, maakte het geen deel uit van de kerkstructuren, maar was het losgekoppeld en geïsoleerd.
De Toren van uitmuntendheid, misschien wel de hoogste in Palermo, heeft zijn defensieve betekenis verloren door de stadsuitbreiding van de stad. Vervolgens werd hij verfijnd en verloor hij zijn sobere uiterlijk. In feite werden op het tweede niveau glasramen toegepast met behulp van inlegwerk.
Sinds 2013 is de toren van San Nicolò open voor het publiek met rondleidingen georganiseerd door de coöperatie Terradamare.
