De Amsterdamse Schouwburg waar Joost van den Vondels Lucifer in 1654 werd opgevoerd, bevond zich op het Leidseplein in Amsterdam. Nu staat daar de Stadsschouwburg / Internationaal Theater Amsterdam (ITA). De huidige neorenaissance-schouwburg stamt uit 1894, na een brand in 1890 waarbij het vorige gebouw verloren ging.
In januari 1654 voltooide Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679) in Amsterdam zijn mooiste tragedie: Lucifer. In zijn vlammende opvoering van de strijd tussen goed en kwaad voerde Vondel meteen ook de meest indrukwekkende versie van de duivel in de Nederlandstalige literatuur ten tonele. Lucifer werd geselecteerd in de Canon van Vlaanderen.
