De brug verbindt Noordereiland met de oude haven. De brug is vernoemd naar koning Willem III en ontworpen door C. Veerling. Hij werd gemaakt in 1981. In 1983 ontving hij de Nationale Staalprijs.
De voorganger van deze brug speelde een belangrijke rol tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het Nederlandse leger verdedigde deze brug na de inval van de Duitsers op 10 mei 1940. Ze konden de Duitse invasie op deze plek stoppen en de Duitsers besloten om het centrum van Rotterdam op 14 mei 1940 te bombarderen.
