Het ligt direct ten noordwesten van de stad Sneek en ten oosten van Tjalhuizum. Door het dorpsgebied stroomt de Franekervaart. In 2021 telde het dorp 690 inwoners.Over het ontstaan van IJsbrechtum heerst onduidelijkheid. Mogelijk is het dorp gebouwd op een terp, oftewel een aangelegde heuvel, al wordt ook gesteld dat deze heuvel een natuurlijke verhoging betreft. Hierop is momenteel onder meer nog het kerkhof gelegen. Het dorp was in ieder geval omringd door een bosrijk gebied. Daarvan was de entree prominent gelegen.
