De vijver in het midden van de fraaie en kenmerkende Ring in hartje Zuidland was in de Middeleeuwen de haven van het dorp. Zuytlant kreeg in de 14e eeuw tol- en marktrechten en pikte zo een graantje mee van de welvaart van de steden Brielle en Geervliet.
