De zondagsrust is op 17 september 1944 al twee keer door het luchtalarm verstoord, maar steeds was het loos alarm. De mensen zijn dan ook gewoon ter kerke gegaan als plotseling opnieuw het luchtalarm klinkt. De kerkgangers weten nog niets van de dingen die gaan komen deze dag. Niet veel later worden de Duitse kazernes in Arnhem gebombardeerd en vallen er ook burgerslachtoffers.
