Het ligt ten noorden van de stad Leeuwarden, tussen Stiens en Hijum, waarmee het veel samenwerkt. Door het dorpsgebied stroomt de Finkumervaart waaraan ook een passantenhaven zit. In 2021 telde het dorp 160 inwoners. Onder het dorp valt ook de buurtschap Poelhuizen.Finkum is als een huisterp ontstaan rond de christelijke jaartelling. Deze terp was opgeworpen op een kwelderwal. De uitbreiding van een huisterp naar dorp komt waarschijnlijk door een buitenverblijf van het klooster Mariëngaarde in Hallum. Het klooster bezat veel grond in het gebied. Toen het klooster in 1580 de macht verloor, namen vier adellijke families deze over.
