Door turfwinning in het uitgestrekte en laaggelegen veengebied werden hier in de 16e eeuw de Langeraarse Plassen gevormd bestaande uit een drietal door veendijken gescheiden plassen: de Zuidplas (ca. 65 ha), de Noord- of Oostplas (ca. 65 ha) en de Geerplas (ca. 35 ha). De veendijken (of veenkades) onstonden doordat de relatief smalle stroken die werden gebruikt als wegen, niet werden ontgonnen. De plassen staan met elkaar in verbinding, hoewel op dit ogenblik, vanwege experimenten om de waterkwaliteit te verhogen, de verbinding tussen de Noordplas en de Geerpolder Plas is afgesloten
