De aanwezigheid van de Gau, een natuurlijke waterbron, heeft een belangrijke rol gespeeld in het ontstaan van Vaals. Een waterrijk gebied is namelijk een aantrekkelijke vestigingsplek; daarop wijzen de resten van bewoning in deze omgeving. Zo werden bij de herinrichting van het Koningin Julianaplein afwatersystemen ontdekt en ook een goot, afgedekt met hout en natuursteen, vermoedelijk een ouderwetse riolering.

Uit historische bronnen is bekend dat rond het Von Clermonthuis uitgestrekte tuinen lagen met fonteinen waarvoor eveneens water nodig was. Ook in de lakenfabriek werd water gebruikt. De Gau stroomt ondergronds nog steeds door het gebied, maar is niet meer zichtbaar.
