HET OVERIJSSELS KANAAL

Description

In 1850 werd bij koninklijk besluit toestemming verleend door Koning Willem III om dit kanaal te graven. In 1851 begon men met dit grote karwei. Er werkten 532 arbeiders aan dit immense project. Ze verdienden 15 cent per kubieke el afgegraven grond. De grond werd gebruikt voor de kanaaldijk. Op 12 juni 1855 werd het gedeelte Hancate-Almelo geopend en op 7 september het gedeelte Dalmsholte-Deventer.

Tot ongeveer 1956 voeren schepen door het kanaal met suikerbieten, turf, zand en kunstmest. Tegenwoordig wordt het kanaal gebruikt voor de toevoer en afvoer van het water.
