Het Amsterdamse Bos ligt vrijwel geheel in de gemeente Amstelveen . Het deel ten zuiden van de autosnelweg A9 lag tot 2002 in de gemeente Aalsmeer, maar de gemeentegrens tussen Amstelveen en Aalsmeer ligt sindsdien bij de Bosrandweg. De gemeente Amsterdam is eigenaar en beheerder van het bos.
De inspirator voor het Amsterdamse Bos was Jac. P. Thijsse. Al in 1900 maakte hij zich zorgen om het groen rond de stad. In zijn werk gaf hij aan dat het gebied bezuiden de Nieuwe Meer zeer geschikt was voor het aanleggen van een bos.
