Het karmelietessenklooster is gesticht in 1875 door Duitse karmelietessen die hun klooster in Keulen (Sankt Gereon) moesten verlaten vanwege de Kulturkampf.
Klooster en kapel zijn gebouwd naar een ontwerp van architect Cuypers, met sobere neogotische elementen. Sinds 2002 is het klooster Rijksmonument.
Het klooster is met name bekend geworden doordat de heilige Teresia-Benedicta van het Kruis (Edith Stein) hier geleefd heeft (1938-1942).
Wie de persoon van Edith Stein wil leren kennen, ziet zich geplaatst tegenover een hartstochtelijke waarheid-zoeker. Die liefde voor de waarheid heeft heel haar leven bepaald.
