De Bataafse Republiek , vanaf 1801 het Bataafs Gemenebest geheten, was een republiek die het grootste gedeelte van het huidige Nederland omvatte. De republiek was gevormd naar voorbeeld en met militaire steun van de Franse Republiek, waarvan de Bataafse Republiek een zusterrepubliek was en de facto een vazalstaat. Op 1 maart 1796 kwam voor het eerst in de Nederlandse geschiedenis een nationaal en democratisch gekozen parlement bij elkaar. Aan de Bataafse Republiek kwam een einde bij de stichting van het Koninkrijk Holland in 1806.
