Een groot contrast met de natuurlijke omgeving waarin je wandelt, vormt de glastuinbouw rondom Bovenkarspel. Vanaf de rand van het Streekbos heb je hier goed zicht op. Er is hier in de loop van de jaren veel veranderd, want voor de grote ruilverkaveling in 1978 was ook het bos agrarische grond. Een klein stukje geschiedenis van de glastuinbouw. Eind 19e eeuw voeren lokale tuinders nog met houten schuiten door smalle West-Friese sloten naar de historische Vaarveiling om groenten en bloembollen te leveren. Achter het station legden de schuiten aan, waar de oogst op de trein werd geladen. Rond 1970 minderde dit door het gebruik van vrachtwagens. Tegenwoordig worden van hieruit miljoenen, in kassen gekweekte tulpen wereldwijd geëxporteerd.
