Frederik II van Pruisen veroverde Silezië in de Silezische Oorlogen grotendeels. Na het Congres van Wenen werd in 1815 de gelijknamige provincie in het leven geroepen, die ook de noordoostelijke Opper-Lausitz omvatte.
De provincie industrialiseerde in de 19e eeuw sterk. Silezië werd in 1919 opgedeeld in de provincies Neder-Silezië en Opper-Silezië.
