Het paleis van Dom Manuel was een koninklijk paleis waar veel Portugese koningen hebben verbleven. Volgens de kroniek bestond het paleis uit verschillende gebouwen, onder andere een renaissanceklooster, de Sala da Rainha, het refectorium en de koninklijke bibliotheek. Er blijft weinig over van het paleis. Het paleis was één van de belangrijkste gebouwen in het land en het had ook een enorme historische waarde. Het was hier dat Vasco da Gama de opdracht kreeg om een zeeroute te vinden naar Indië.
