De Ponte do Pinhão werd ontworpen door het beroemde architectenbureau van Gustave Eiffel. Hoewel Eiffel zelf niet direct bij de constructie betrokken was, droeg zijn bureau het ontwerp aan.
De bouw van de brug begon in 1903 en ze werd ingehuldigd in 1906.
De Douro-lijn, waartoe deze brug behoort, werd aangelegd in de late 19e eeuw (de sectie naar Pinhão werd voltooid in 1880) en was van groot belang voor het transport van mensen en goederen, met name de portwijn uit de regio.
