In Nyköping maakte koningin Christina een korte stop bij het kasteel waar de koningin-moeder Maria Eleanora woonde om afscheid van haar te nemen. Het was de laatste keer dat de twee vrouwen elkaar ontmoetten: Maria Eleonora zou binnen een jaar overlijden. De relatie tussen hen was problematisch, niet in de laatste plaats vanwege de donkere jaren waarin moeder en kind samenleefden in Nyköping na de dood van koning Christina's vader, koning Gustaf Adolf. Het kasteel zou in 1665 samen met de stad afbranden. Later werden delen van het complex herbouwd. Van het oorspronkelijke kasteel is het poortgebouw (tussen het kasteel en de kerk recht tegenover) het best bewaard gebleven. Tegenwoordig wordt het gebouw gebruikt als historisch museum.
