Gek genoeg ontstond de traditie van de Saint Patrick's Day Parade niet in Ierland, maar bij uitgeweken leren in Amerika en elders - de eerste parades zouden in Boston (1737) en New York! (1762) hebben plaatsgevonden. In de loop van de negentiende eeuw werd 17 maart steeds belangrijker voor de leden van de Ierset diaspora, die zich in veel gevallen wentelden in heimwee naar het moederland. De viering van Saint Patrick's Day was tot de late twintigste eeuw groter buiten Ierland dan in het land. 17 maart was er weliswaar een officiële (en samen met kerst misschien de allerbelangrijkste) feestdag, maar de festiviteiten bleven lange tijd) beperkt.
