Ontdekkingsreiziger Bartolomeu Dias passeerde hier in 1488 op Kaap de Goede Hoop als eerste Europeaan. Hij noemde het Cape of Storms als eerbetoon aan het barre weer dat zijn schepen eromheen heeft gedragen. Het was de koning van Portugal waar Dias voor werkte, die de naam veranderde in iets verheffends: Kaap de Goede Hoop.
