Im Jahr 1856 wurde es in Amsterdam verboten, die Notdurft auf der Straße zu verrichten. Um zu verhindern, dass die dunklen Gassen und abgelegenen Orte noch mehr zu Toiletten erhoben wurden, ließ die Stadt 250 gusseiserne Toiletten installieren, die man an einigen Orten sehen kann, wie in der Nähe des Bahnhofs, Amstelveld, der Prinsengracht und dem Sarphatipark.
Diese gusseisernen Urinale werden wegen ihrer Form "Krümmel" genannt und auch "Sekrete". Letzteres Wort hat sich zu einem Schimpfwort entwickelt.
